AI in Action: Enhancing Students' Understanding of Sentence Structure Comprehension

Abstract :This study investigates the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in teaching sentence slots and patterns to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. Understanding sentence structures is crucial for EFL learners, as it enhances their ability to comprehend and formulate accurate English sentences. Sentence slots refer to the different positions or roles that words and phrases can occupy within a sentence structure, and mastering these is vital for creating effective sentences in writing and speech. However, many students struggle to grasp these essential components, hindering their overall language proficiency and writing abilities. This research explores the potential of AI-enhanced instruction to address this critical issue in grammar classes. By utilizing AI, educators can provide personalized support that helps students better understand sentence structures and their functions. This innovative approach not only makes learning more attractive but also empowers students to master the complexities of language, ultimately enhancing their proficiency in English. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methodologies to assess the impact of AI integration on students’ performance, engagement, and perceptions. Using pre- and post-tests, questionnaires, and observations, the research examines whether AI-enhanced teaching improves students’ overall performance, interaction, and involvement in class activities. Additionally, it investigates students’ perceptions of their learning experience when utilizing AI technology. The study focuses on EFL students in Applied linguistics department at College of Languages who often face difficulties in recognizing sentence patterns and understanding the core slots of sentences and their functions. These challenges are particularly prevalent in core language courses, where identifying sentence patterns is crucial for academic success. By embracing AI in grammar classes, this research aims to provide insights into innovative teaching methods that can facilitate a more engaging and accessible learning experience
