Challenges of Learning Hindi for Armenian-Speaking Students (A Preliminary Analytical Study Based on the Phonetic Contrasts Between the Two Languages)
Author : Alina Khlghatyan
Abstract : Hindi and Armenian are among the oldest languages of the Indo-European language family. While both languages show structural and grammatical similarities, several differences are also clearly visible. Due to these differences, Armenian students may face various problems or challenges during the process of learning Hindi. When it comes to learning a second/foreign language, contrastive analysis of languages is usually the first tool used. By studying the contrasts or divergences between the two languages, one can anticipate the challenges or difficulties a learner may encounter while learning another language. This article attempts to highlight the phonetic problems faced by Armenian students based on a contrastive study of the phonological systems of Hindi and Armenian, as well as on a questionnaire conducted with Armenian students. These issues may pose significant challenges to Armenian learners in the process of acquiring Hindi as a foreign language.
