Contribution of Waste Disposal Practices Towards Environmental Sustainability in Vocational Training Institutions in Tanzania: Methods and Trends

Abstract : Waste disposal management is an aspect that has received attention globally due to its impact on environmental sustainability as one of the components in the Millennium Development Goals. This study aimed to examine the contribution of waste disposal practices adopted by Vocational Training Institutions (VTIs) by addressing key waste disposal methods from a training sector perspective. To meet the study's objective, the study employed a population of 360 people working at VETA Dodoma, and from this population, a sample of 78 respondents was selected. The study utilized mixed data collection tools, and the captured data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in the form of regression analysis to determine the strength of the predictor variables on environmental sustainability. The results indicated that the recycling method emerged as the most effective waste disposal method with a beta value of 0.684, p-value .000, followed by waste segregation method (beta .188, p-value .019 and lastly the incineration method (beta .096, p-value .033). Finally, the study provided recommendations to stakeholders for the effective use of waste disposal methods. The study provides novelty by presenting the first-hand information on waste disposal methods in a sectoral context of VTIs in developing countries using unique approaches and methods.
