Exploring the Relationship Between Motivation in Mathematics and Attitude Towards Mathematics among Class VIII students: A Correlational Study
Author : Lalita Betgarm, Russell D’Souza
Abstract : The present study investigates the relationship between students’ motivation in mathematics and their attitudes toward the mathematics using a correlational research design. The sample comprised 80 Class VIII students selected from a randomly chosen school in Goa. A quantitative approach was adopted to analyze the relationship between the variables. Data were collected using the Mathematics Motivation Scale developed by Berger and Karabenick (2011) and the Mathematics Attitude Scale by Yasar et al. (2014). Pearson’s correlation coefficient was employed to assess the association between students’ motivation and their attitudes. The findings revealed a moderate, positive, and statistically significant relationship between these two variables. The study underscores the importance of fostering both motivation and positive attitudes in mathematics education to support the holistic development of learners.
