Women in Urban Space – Gender-Sensitive Urban Planning

Abstract : The paper provides a comprehensive overview of the actions implemented to incorporate a female perspective in urban planning practices in Serbia. Although the obligation to adopt a gender-sensitive approach and the establishment of an appropriate legal framework have not yet officially come into effect, significant progress has been made in raising awareness among urban planners and decision makers. Additionally, support has been extended to NGOs and citizens to encourage the co-creative and participatory planning process. Various issues, ranging from basic comfort standards to women's safety in public urban spaces, have been analyzed across different typologies of urban environments, with particular emphasis on the mobility of female users. The recommendations presented are not only technical but also social and legislative, aimed at influencing public policy creation. While this topic has been acknowledged globally for many years, it has not been prioritized in some traditionally male-dominated societies. This moment presents a valuable opportunity to reevaluate the entire planning system and integrate new perspectives and needs.
