Video Assessment Module for Moodle: Research, Development, and Classroom Implementation in Language Education

Author : Matthew James Cotter

Abstract : The Video Assessment Module (VAM) is an open-source Moodle plugin designed to support rubric-based assessment of student video performances through integrated self-, peer-, and teacher-feedback processes. Developed through a twelve-year action research project addressing challenges in oral presentation assessment, VAM allows students to upload speaking performances and receive asynchronous feedback within a single assessment environment. This presentation reviews research and development conducted to date, including the pedagogical foundations of VAM, classroom implementation, and ongoing refinement. Previous studies have examined the role of video-mediated assessment in promoting learner reflection, improving feedback quality, and supporting the development of speaking skills. Findings suggest that combining self-assessment, peer assessment, and teacher evaluation encourages greater engagement with assessment criteria and increases awareness of strengths and areas for improvement. Recent work has focused on plugin development, bilingual documentation, user experience enhancements, and wider adoption within Japanese higher education. The presentation will synthesise key findings, discuss practical implementation considerations, examine user responses from teachers and students, and outline future directions for the continued development of VAM. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the plugin, including its educational applications, availability, and installation within Moodle environments.
